April’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is Sunflower Lemonade — a dramedy series written by Jamila Pomeroy.
Jamila is a Kenyan-Canadian award-winning writer/director. She has a decade of experience as a writer; spanning print, new media and film. Jamila has worked with globally-recognized outlets, namely, BBC, CBC, TELUS originals, Netflix, Hypebeast, Red Bull Media, Network Entertainment and more. Her work across all mediums is known to unpack contemporary social issues, while generating accessible, comedic and intellectually-charged storylines.
“Jamila not only sets up a fascinating world with intrigue and mystery, but also a really sweet family dynamic we don't often see onscreen,” says WGC member Brittany Ashley who worked with Jamila to polish the script. “I'm excited for Jamila's career as a multi-hyphenate creator with loads of experience in so many creative realms!”
“I’m so thrilled that my dramedy pilot, Sunflower Lemonade, was selected as April's Script of the Month," says Jamila. "I created this series because I’ve never seen the biracial African-Canadian experience represented in film and television, and wanted to connect people through smart comedy and immersive drama. I would love to be considered for writers’ rooms and hope to carve out more space for authentic BIPOC narratives. I’m excited about my current development slate, which consists of 8 dramedy, dark comedy and thriller film & TV projects; and I look forward to connecting with future collaborators and producers."
Congratulations, Jamila!
