July’s Script of the Month as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is Habib, a super hero comedy written by Rob Michaels. Rob is an Iraqi-Canadian writer, director, and performer from Toronto. He’s written for CBC’s new workplace comedy One More Time, CTV/Roku’s Children Ruin Everything, and CTV’s Roast Battle Canada - which garnered him a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Writing. He also recently directed his first feature film with Vortex Media. He has performed with The Second City, and has a sketch comedy channel that has accumulated millions of views online.
"Two pages into Habib I felt the rare joy and relief of knowing I was going to be in good hands for the rest of it,” says WGC member Barry Julien who worked with Rob to polish the script. “I don’t laugh out loud much when I read scripts, but this really got me several times. And what a delight to discover Rob Michaels had really done the work to build it all on strong characters and sound story principles. He was an absolute joy to work with, full of ideas and solid, character-based jokes, all in a strong, unique voice. Hire him."
“I'm incredibly excited for Habib to be chosen as Script of the Month,” says Rob. “What started as a one-off viral comedy sketch has grown into so much more after seeing countless people resonate [with it] and wish it was a real series. There's a massive untapped market for this satirical but poignant reflection of our world, and I'd love to find like-minded partners to help bring it to life.”
Congratulations, Rob!
