November’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is The Miseducation of Naz—a half-hour dramedy series written by Hedyeh Bozorgzadeh.
Hedy is an Iranian-Canadian impact writer-producer focusing on voices from the margins. A UBC Film Program graduate, she is an alumna of WFF Writers’ Lab, Wet Ink Collective, Canada Council for the Arts Scriptwriting Grant and Research and Creation Grant. She has completed Sundance/Collab TV writing courses focusing on outline, pilot, and mapping the series. Her first feature, “Brother, Man” is in development with CBC, TF, CMF, and Creative BC.
“The Miseducation of Naz is a hilarious, character-driven comedy following an ESL teacher with dreams of working in the film industry,” says WGC member Angelica Mendizabal who worked with Hedy to polish the script. “It’s a pilot that brims with Hedyeh’s fresh voice as she brings together a story that is sharp, relatable and full of hope. There is such warmth in this script — Hedyeh understands this community of vibrant teachers and students to their core and captures something real in this story. It was an absolute pleasure to read and be immersed in Naz’s world and the spectrum of chaos she grapples with. Hedyeh is a talented writer — her openness and willingness to dig deeper into characters make her a wonderful addition to any writers room.”
“I am thrilled to have my dramedy, The Miseducation of Naz, considered for November’s Script of the Month! As an Iranian-Canadian, I believe we need more varied, out-of-the-box authentic stories that challenge the status quo and shed light on our identity as ever fluid, shifting, and dynamic. I am seeking like-minded producers who are committed to highlighting diverse stories from the margins and would love to be considered for a writers room. With gratitude.”
Congratulations, Hedy!
