November’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is Millennials, a one-hour drama series written by Leandro Matos. Leandro is an experienced Brazilian writer based in Toronto, with 150+ produced scripts for film and television. He has collaborated with industry giants like 20th Century Fox, Disney Plus, The Walt Disney Company, and Netflix. He was one of the writers of the Brazilian version of Drunk History, which helped to double the audience for Comedy Central. His latest feature Desapega!, released in February, emerged as one of this year's top-grossing films in Brazil.
“I’m thrilled to have Millennials chosen as November’s Script of the Month,” says Leandro. “I’ve been a comedy writer for most of my career, and even though I absolutely love to create the most insane situations and even more insane reactions from my characters, this time I was looking into write something that would challenge me creatively and take me out of my comfort zone (as if being an immigrant wasn’t enough!). I wanted to talk about the challenges my generation is facing, like Thirtysomething so brilliantly did 30 years ago with the baby boomers, and how interesting it is to be such a transitional generation while the characters are also going through such a transitional moment in their lives when they hit 30. Although this show is not biographical, it is in many ways. It’s a tribute to our chosen family of friends, especially my own, and I hope they’ll like what I did – and still want to keep in touch – if this show is ever produced.”
"Millennials is a wonderful read and a refreshing take on an ensemble character drama,” says WGC member Dan Godwin who worked with Leandro to polish the script. “Leandro is an experienced writer, and his talent shows on the page. His willingness to explore and refine the story while maintaining his authentic voice makes him an absolute pleasure to work with."
Congratulations, Leandro!
