July’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is Hostel California—a half-hour comedy series written by Rob Michaels.
Rob is an Iraqi-Canadian writer, director, and performer from Toronto. He’s written for CBC’s One More Time, CTV/Roku’s Children Ruin Everything, and CTV’s Roast Battle Canada - which garnered him multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations for Best Writing. He has performed extensively with The Second City and has created sketches that have accumulated millions of views online.
“Hostel California checks so many boxes for producers: an original idea that is born of personal experience, chock full of fun characters, and great jokes,” says WGC member Barry Julien who worked with Rob to polish the script. “Moreover, Rob Michaels is a rare comedic voice that is witty and silly and original. I hope I get to work with him again in the future.”
“I'm super excited to have Hostel California selected as script of the month,” says Rob. “With hostels being an inherently comedic location home to an assortment of characters, my hope is to use this budget-friendly, escapist workplace to touch on themes of new beginnings, while showcasing the beauty and benefits of travelling. If anyone's looking to make White Lotus for poor people, this is the script for you.”
Congratulations, Rob!
